Theresa | 15850 comments Second in the Hawthorne series, this is a delight with the added bonus of being a book about a divorce fitting a PS prompt. You see, it is a London divorce lawyer who is murdered and of course the couple whose divorce just settled come under investigation. Once again the author is a character writing a book about the investigation of the murder he is helping Hawthorne investigate, making this an entertaining bit of metafiction. Sherlock Holmes looms large over this one, with Hawthorne as Holmes and the author as a rather hapless Watson. Have tissues ready at the end which is twisty but less so than the first in the series. Then make sure you read the acknowledgments and, if your copy has it, the oh so amusing essay slash interview at the very end.

I do so enjoy this series, happily as I was a bit worried that the novelty of the audacity of putting himself in has the narrator would cool me to it. Nope. Horowitz is one playful clever writer.

I was thrilled when I started this and realized it fit! I had really wondered.
